A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

My work opens itself to interpretation. It is framed only by the margins of the canvas, but is otherwise meant to be an unrestricted dialogue. Each piece can be placed horizontally or vertically, the pieces are not signed on the front leaving the viewers free to connect with each piece as freely as possible. Each piece was inspired by a place I travelled to and/or by a strong emotion that I was experiencing at a certain time and the colors that I associated with that place or emotion.

I refrained from naming my works because I did not want to precondition the viewer to feel or think of particular places or emotions. Instead, I wanted them to question the need for categorizing as opposed to simply experiencing. I want them to relate to my work based on what they feel in the moment and the connection that they create with the piece. The movement of strokes can be perceived as either strong or soft depending on what the viewer feels when they look at a piece. Certain silhouettes created by the movement of the strokes or by the colors can be read as silhouettes of the human body or of different animals as well as basic objects. It depends on each individual interpretation.

Experiencing the exhibition becomes a game of guessing and, at the same time, resisting sense-making. The plexiglass series is meant to be experienced ”from within” as viewers can approach the pieces from all sides, therefore putting a different spin on the idea of immersing oneself in a work of art. Finally, the triangle painting speaks to my Romanian identity which is to be traced in the optical illusion induced by the work, which looks like a beaded surface, in the style of Romanian folk design. The colors of the Romanian flag (red, yellow, blue) are multiplied and the work becomes an expansion of national identity beyond nationalism and embracing multiplicity.

The weight of the painting speaks to grounding but also to the burden that characterize identity. Roots feed us and bind us at the same time.
